Cheera upperry/ Cheera Thoran

Cheera ,red spinach is so special for all the malayalees. Chorum, thyyrrum,cheera uppery (Rice, curd and cheera ) makes a very special meal  from little ones to adults in the family.

Ingredients:
Cheera/Red spinach - 1 bunch
garlic pod  - 2 crushed with a rolling pin /with a spatula
matta rice /brown rice - 2 tsp
grated coconut - 1/4 cup
crushed chilly powder - 1tsp
turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
salt to taste
oil - 2tsp

Directions:
Soak cheera  in water for 5-10 minutes to get rid of the sand. Wash it well under running water. Let it drain thoroughly in a colander . Chop the red spinach finely.
Heat a pan and add the spinach  and little salt  and cook it without covering with a lid  stiring  2- 3 times in between . The spinach will change its  color and reduce into half. Keep it aside .
Heat another  pan add oil  ,add the matta /brown rice  , it will puff up like rice puffs . Add crushed garlic .stir for a minute. Add grated coconut and fry for some time . Now add the turmeric and crushed chilly powder and stir till the raw smell goes away. When the coconut changes the color to light brown  add the cooked red spinach / cheera. Stir till the water gets evaporate .
 Do a "taste test" and add salt if needed  and turn off the heat. Serve with warm rice and homemade yogurt/curd.
